Timber workers cottage by Nicholas Murray Architects

On a street lined with Victorian houses, Nicholas Murray Architects challenged to transform a small timber workers cottage in Melbourne’s Albert Park into a modern occupancy.

The biggest hurdle for Nicholas Murray Architects was to create a sense of space and light in the small 4.5m wide area.

mafi floorboards in Coral Oak Black Brushed Natural Oil were specified throughout the ground level of the main house, which included the open free flowing living/kitchen and dining spaces and the study.

The mafi Coral Oak collection is characterized by a very vivid appearance of heartwood with artistically integrated cracks.

The first floor contained the master bedroom, dressing and en-suite with a sun deck set away from the heritage streetscape.

At the rear a new two level pavilion provided guest accommodation and car parking.

The client insisted that Nicholas Murray also assist with the furnishings and décor to maintain coherency and a sense of exclusivity throughout the project.

Quirky pieces and bold furniture were thoughtfully selected to refine and complement the style. Bright furnishings contrasted well with the rich character of mafi Coral Oak floors.
